Where I got my ideas for my magazine

In this blogpost you will see where i got all of my ideas from for my music magazine, Starting with the front cover..

These two images of two Kerrang! front covers are where I got the ideas for my music magazine, I took different ideas and made them into my own, the one major thing that I kept the same was the colours, I stuck to the idea of them being dark, since dark colors represent darkness which also represents what most rock / metal bands sing about

The next image is where i got my ideas for my content page, but with a few changes..

This is the content page that I got my ideas from, but once again referring back to my magazine cover, I chose to keep the colors dark

This next image was the image that got me thinking for my double page spread, it made me want to make the text be about an exclusive interview and for the text to be on one side of the page with the main part of the image on the other..

This next video is the type of thing that would happen at concerts by bands that would be promoted on my music magazine, this is why I chose to have my targeted audience the way I have

This next image is who I would be aiming to attract as a publisher since they own big magazines like Q and Kerrang so their company is suitable for my magazine to be published by

These next 2 videos are the type of music videos that represent what I would be publishing (The music / sound)

This next image is what i wanted my magazine to be the opposite of, so the colors and the main image stood out from one another, i wanted to make sure the dark colors would stand out from the brightly colored magazines such as the following..

Steps of my front cover.

In this blogpost I will be showing step by step on how I simply created my rock music magazine.

In this first image, this is just me simply placing an image I previously took, onto photoshop to use as my main image.

This next image is me resizing the image to suit the size of the magazine and also shows me changing the brightness of the image to give it a better effect.

This next screenshot is just me placing a banner onto the main image which is the magazine name which i previously made using photoshop, alls I did was make a few layers of different text then moved them around to get this;

The next image you will see is me simply adding a bit of text to the magazine cover which says 'Bleach!" which is the bands name, the main image is of the lead singer of the rock band "Bleach!".

I then removed the white background from this text.

After I did this I then added this text to my music magazine cover.

In the next screenshot you are about to see I just simply added text on a separate layer of a quote that the band "Bleach!" use quite often.

In this next image, i went onto the internet to find a text that simply wrote in lines to make it look like a barcode, I then put numbers underneath and added a white boarder / background to it.

The next screenshot is me placing the barcode I made onto the magazine cover.

The next image is me adding a pug into the corner of the magazine to make it eye catchy.

In the next screenshot there is a lot of changes, but I will tell you how and what I done to make these changes in the next paragraph.

There is a lot of changes in this image, the first big change is the banner / masthead, Alls I did was re-arrange the text layers of it to make it look better since in the previous screenshot it looked like the "R" was overpowered by "ICON" so I moved them about to make it the other way around which is eye catchy and effective. Another change is the text above the band name which says "Exclusive To Rock Icon!", I just simply used text box to add this writing, I done it as it is eye catching because the white writing stands out on the main image, also the yellow and red text stand out of the main image which will catch the eye of the targeted audience. I changed the pug in the bottom left corner because I thought it didn't fit in, so i shaded the yellow box and changed the text to make it seem like this band has already hit the big leagues which will attract the targeted audience. Next to this pug you will see a smaller image of the bands lead singer, Micheal Hayes, and there is a text box next to it which will also catch the targeted audiences eye and may interest them in the magazine.

Props & Characters

Prop List;

Small Stairs

The characters;

Michael Hayes

Why am I using this character?

I am using this character because he is tall, dark haired and will be wearing a leather jacket which connotes to me he is the type of person to be in a rock band or to like rock music, I think he would be perfectly suitable for my front cover of my magazine cover because of this.

Why am I using this prop?

The reason why I am only using this prop is for the fact that if he sits down on them for the image then it will sort of connote that he's got a laid back personality but for the fact that everything in the image is dark it shows he's quite a dark person himself which relates to the band he is in, "Bleach" which is a rock / metal band.

Mood Board

This mood board that I have created shows the mood of the genre that I will be focusing on, the genre is Rock, the mood of this mood board has 2 moods to it, aggressive and cheerful. Aggressive for the bands Slipknot, Metalica, AC-DC and Kiss, cheerful for the bands Nickelback, Foo Fighters and Rolling Stones. I will need to focus on these moods for my double page spread, content page and front cover.

Mock up of my double page spread

This is my mock up of my double page spread.

Fonts and colours

In this blogpost I will be telling you about what font and colours I will be using and why, and also what I wont be using and why.

This first image i'm certain I will be the font and colours i will be using as it stands out and is affective in connotation towards the music genre Rock.

This second image image i would use since the font and colours have no representation or relevance to the music genre Rock since the colours are to bright and the font is just plain.

This third image I also wouldn't use as yet again it has to relevance to the music genre Rock, it looks to calm and wouldn't suit the magazine cover I have planned at all.

Front Cover Ideas

In this blog post I will be telling you about what we done in todays lesson.

Firstly, we found out what colours catch peoples eyes and what ones stand out more than any, this has helped me think about what colours and what style of font I want to use on my front cover for my music magazine, these are;

For the front cover the main house style colours will be, black, red and yellow. Black for the background as it will help the other font / text stand out more than any other coloured background, and also, the colour black suits my music magazine as I will be focusing on the music genre 'Rock'.

The masthead for my music magazine will be a style of font that looks like graffiti but is easy to read, it will be red with yellow on it, I think this will stand out on the black background and will also catch the eye of the targeted audience, along side suiting the house style and the genre of music.

These are 2 images of 2 different Rock magazines we used as an example. The 'Kerrang!' magazine uses a lot of bright colours, such as a blue background with a white masthead which is overlapped by the main image of Dave Grohl (Lead singer for the band Foo Fighters), this magazine cover is suitable for the music genre because of the main image in my opinion, this is because the main image is the lead singer of Foo Fighters, they are a rock band that are always quite amusing and happy with cheerful type of music which suits brighter colours.

This second image is an image of the rock magazine 'Classic Rock', this uses a few dull colours such as beige and grey, these suit the style of rock they are using and suits the magazine as a whole, this is because of what the masthead insinuates. It insinuates that "Classic" 'Rock's' main fans / listeners are older, this is because to young people Classic Rock is old rock and nothing of it is really new, so therefor the majority of their listeners will be a little bit older, but to them its not what is seen as Old Rock, its just normal Rock, i know this because on the masthead the masthead reads 'Classic Rock' the 'Classic' is rather small but the 'Rock' is huge. This magazine doesn't have many eye catching features since it is just plain and dull with no main image, so their isn't much to view, but because of this is stands out from other music magazines.

Analysing 4 music magazine covers

In this blog post I will be doing 4 short analysis of 4 different music magazines, only stating why they're suitable for their targeted audience and how they stand out (If they're eye catchy).

This first magazine is extremely good for a few reasons such as; it suits its targeted audience perfectly as the band on the cover "Arctic Monkeys" mainly focus on the genre of music 'Indie'/'Classical Rock', and the front cover of the magazine suits this as it is a sort of laid back cover, their isn't much going on, on the cover, so its not hectic and with the easy colours of white and yellow makes the cover look slightly relaxing as those colours connote something thats soothing. Also what helps this point is the main image, the way the band members are just looking into the camera, not posing, it connotes to me that they know they're getting a photo taken but they're just being plain, laid back people which suits
their genre of music.

This second magazine cover is perfect for the targeted audience and its eye catching for reasons such as; the both of the named bands both focus on the genre of music 'Rock' and some other sub genres of this genre such as 'Light Rock' and 'Heavy Rock'. The cover of this magazine really suits this genre as the genre 'Rock' has always been mainly a type of music that involves a lot of shouting with strong words and is always hectic, this cover shows that as it has a lot going on, on the front cover which connotes something 'hectic'. The main image could of been better but its still slightly suitable as the man on the left looks quite aggressive which really suits the genre of music that the band focuses on. But Corey Taylor (The man on the right) looks to laid back to be on the front cover of a major rock magazine.

This third magazine cover is a magazine that focuses on the genre of music 'Metal', the band on the cover is called 'Slipknot' they focus on the music genre 'Metal' and some sub genres of that, they also focus on the genre 'Rock'. The magazine cover really suits this genre of music since the front cover colours are mainly black and red which connote danger and something hectic, another thing that connotes something being hectic within the cover is the fact that there is a lot going on, on the cover its self. This is also extremely eye catchy which helps sell the product and attracts the attention of the targeted audience.

This fourth, last magazine cover I will be analysing in this blogpost is a magazine that focuses on mainly the music genre 'Classic Rock'. The magazine successfully shows this by their main images, they also don't put a lot of stuff on the magazine so it looks calm, the main image on this magazine in particular is perfect for the style / genre of music they focus on, this is because the man on the image looks relaxed and looks casual, this connotes something relaxing in my opinion. The colours on the magazine are also successful and suit the magazine since the colours are mainly white and grey, which connotes something calm. The use of buzz words on this music magazine are really use full since they still have the main colours of grey and white, these 'Buzz Words' are extremely eye catching. Overall this music magazine cover will attract the attention of the targeted audience and will be successful.

Images used for a college magazine.

In this blog post i will be showing 4 images, stating what image I would use out of the 4 for a college magazine.

The first image :

I would use this over the other images since there
is room to add magazine codes and conventions,
the image is versatile and easily edited and
personally would get a good analysis.

The second image : I wouldn't use this image since there isn't a lot of room in the image to add
codes conventions, there is also not enough there
to show that it is a successful college and it also
looks slightly informal as their is a coat in the
background and the students look bored, therefor
this may not be eye catchy.

The third image : I would use this but i would use
the first image before this one, the reason why I
would use this image is because the image
contains a student that looks interested in his work, their is a mac computer which shows that
the sixth form takes care and takes into consideration the students work and grades since
their is good technology in the sixth form, this
could be eye catchy and their is space to add
codes and conventions around the student.

The forth image : I wouldn't use this image for
a college magazine since it is seriously informal
since their is a camera in front of one of the students for what ever reason, he's wearing an outdoor hat indoors which may connote no
respect and the students also look slightly bored.

Using Photoshop.

These are a few screenshots of me using photoshop for the first time.

The first image is what i expect to see when i open photoshop.
The second is of me changing the size and making the image A4.
The third image is me adding a picture to photoshop.
The fourth image is me placing a background on the image.
The fifth image is me arranging the background to be behind the image.
The sixth image is me changing the background to another image.
I then placed a picture of a celebrity and made the image black and white, but made the lips stay red.

Analysing a magazine cover.

In this short essay i will be analysing a college magazine cover in numerous ways.

Firstly, does the magazine aim towards its targeted audience?

In somewhat ways I would say that this magazine only reaches a few limits on attracting their targeted audience but on most cases it wont, the targeted audience for this magazine is aged 15+ for people who are interested in joining a college.

The reasons why I don't believe that this magazine cover will reach its limits on attracting the targeted audience for the college is the fact that there isn't much information on the front cover, if their were to be information on what the magazine contains it may be a lot more attractive to the targeted audience, such as if they had on the front an area that had text stating some subjects that they do, it may interest some of the targeted audience to read it, as they may do the subject they're hoping for.
Overall their isn't much text thats eye catching other than certain 'Buzz Words' which are : "Special Insert!" and "Global Learning".

Some of the information on the front cover of the magazine I will say is pretty impressive such as the 'Puff' in the bottom left corner, which promotes what is on one of the pages which states how a young man who went to Ridgewater College now has his 'Dream Job' and living in a state that he dreamed of, this may be interesting for the targeted audience since it will most likely contain on the inside of the magazine on how successful the college is.

The colour on the front cover I suppose in some ways is suitable for the targeted audience as they may be more interested on what the college looks like than just big bright colours with lots of 'Buzz Words', but for a magazine to be eye catching I would say they need more colour and maybe 1 or 2 bright 'Buzz Words' just to catch the eye of the audience.

The image they have used!

The image they have used I would say is almost perfect for a college magazine as it is an image of one of their students possibly sitting in one of the study areas they provide within the college, which shows that the college has good facilities and cares enough about their students grades to spend more and more money to make it so they have a quite area for them to do their subject work and/or revise for upcoming exams. The college has used a medium shot which shows us the student sat in a chair smiling and also shows us the mise-en-scene which I will talk about in the oncoming paragraph.

The mise-en-scene!?

The mise-en-scene is very good for a college magazine as it contains a lot of detail, such as the following : Their is a plant in the corner of the room that the student is sitting in and a plant behind her, plants in a room connote to me relaxation, comfort and peace and sort of looks like a nice place to be able to study, their also isn't any real big distractions in the room that could distract the students from doing their work such as their is high key lighting used which connotes to the audience that the area is a happy type of area which overall shows to me that the college yet again consider the students and care about their grades.

What does Ridgewater College consider important?

As iv stated in the previous paragraphs, the college is more concerned and considers all their students graded and they take everything into consideration and overall I would say this is a very good and slightly eye catching in some ways magazine and attracts its targeted audience pretty well.

Moral Panic

A moral panic is an intense feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order. The media sometimes label celebrities as "Folk Devils", this is basically singling out certain people who have done something wrong and could make a huge impact on kids behaviour for the worse as they celebrities are supposed to be role models and set a standard and are someone for people to look up to. The statement 'Folk Devil' was made in 1972 by a great sociologist named Stanley Cohen.

Chris Brown is a very good example of a 'Folk Devil', after attacking the singer Rihanna, there was a big impact on his career and he made an impact on behaviour in some cases. This particular magazine on the inner pages it contains the interview where Chris Brown admits to it and tries to get people to forget about the incident and feel sorry for him, and it doesn't help since the magazine cover has "NO MORE APOLOGIES" Written on it.

These reasons make me disagree completely with what the media do with todays magazines, they don't care about the impact they have on children who look up to folk devils, yet they still put them on their magazines because alls they care about is gaining profit and making more and more money of all the wrong causes.

The following image is the image of the musical artist Rihanna, after she was attacked by Chris Brown, this is what he put her through, and publishing it on magazines makes it much worse as it will make young children think that its alright to do, which WILL make an impact on their lives, this is why the media need to stop posting pictures of folk devils on their magazines.
